He's some research:
- Last season Detroit finished 3rd while winning 91 games.
- Their budget improved about $11.3M throughout the season.
- Toronto, who went all they way to the World Series last season only brought in around $6.5M during the playoffs.
- Over the first two months Detroit has improved their budget by less than $300K.
- Detroit paid $9.5M into revenue sharing last year.
- Overall Detroit would add about $11.78M towards their payroll with this trade, but they do get $5M cash.
Detroit has $5.5M cash. I don't see Detroit improving their budget by any large amount, maybe another $6-7M more if they continue their big winning ways. Figure maybe they improve their final budget to around $126M. Their payroll after the trade would go to around $144M. With not winning as much out of the gate, they won't have to pay as much into revenue sharing, so figure maybe $7M lost. Ok, say they get to the playoffs, we'll even say they make as much as Toronto did, so plus $6.5M.
$144M Payroll
$126M Budget
$12M Cash (Current plus Playoffs)
$7M Lost in Revenue Sharing
$126M + $12M - $144M - $7M = $-11M
Which in turn would mean Mogul won't allow you to sign Joe Arnold or any other free agency eligible players.
