RE: CHW DET - hokeyrules - 02-11-2012

Detroit Accepts the team is built to win, this will push them in that way, and even if it fails both players will be comp, and will be extra picks for DET next year at worst.

RE: CHW DET - Peter - 02-11-2012

really for two pitchers that probably won't even get renewed with the team. makes no sense to me. veto

RE: CHW DET - AndyP - 02-11-2012

I guess I'm curious how a 24-27 team is built to win now? There won't be any comp for these players, likely aren't going to be resigned, and they're team weaknesses don't appear to be at reliever and starter....

So help me make sense of this. If Detroit was in Minny's position...I'd approve this without blinking. But they're not. They're seven games out with significant flaws. How does a 3rd/4th starter and a reliever suddenly change this picture?

RE: CHW DET - hokeyrules - 02-11-2012

Here is the way I look at it Andy.

The first two sims Detroit did not have a proper lineup, it was not until the 3rd that it was set up better and then the 4th I actually set it up. Yes they are 24-27, but in all honesty their team is arguably the best in the division with JHC rebuilding, Cleveland has a lot of rookies who you never know how they are going to do, and Minnesota is always on the cusp of winning, but needs one trade to push them over, and this trade stops that.

Now you say they don't need help in rotation or bullpen. I disagree Eduardo Martinez their #4 is 2-8 with an e.r.a. of 8.8, he will not start another game for detroit, he is just tossing losses, and we definitely do not have a 5th, but we have a good 1-3 core, arguably the best in the league.

Bullpen wise we do not have a closer Cherry is good, but not a closer, Wood is, as you know he was on your team and has been one of the most consistent relievers in the league. Plus he is doing insane in Chicago and probably will do around the same.

The only other hole we have is 3B really, and maybe SS, however there are very few 3B or SS for trade, there seem to be none available, except for a LF who was a former 3B who could be brought into Detroit, but some things would have to change before that happens. SS is a lost cause right now in terms of trading, as this team does not have enough prospects to do that.

Now yes neither player is compensation this year, nowhere does it stop me from signing Arnold to a 2 year deal and talking to Boras about Ward. I have no intention to let them go to FA if they will not be compensation, and if Ward does not wish to resign there is the offseason to sign him back, and Detroit will have taken salary off by then as well.

The cash helps us get to 10 mil about a million shy of buying out Eduardo Martinez, this cuts back 13.5 mil next year and another 11 mil this year. Not ideal, but its better than him sitting in AAA and taking up his full salary. Also we can not trade him due to his NTC even if some team happened to be interest, so he is dead weight.

This was my thinking when I made the trade.

RE: CHW DET - AndyP - 02-11-2012

The sim lineups is a strong argument, the team did go 17-12 in the month of May. If the intention is to keep these players around, then that is more reasonable.

Approved

RE: CHW DET - mattynokes - 02-11-2012

Hokey may have no intention of letting them go to FA, but what about a new GM? We are hoping to find a new GM for them, right? So there's no telling what a new GM might think. They have very little minor league depth and having the picks (prospects) is more attractive than older veterans who are on the wrong side of 30. Detroit is also on pace to being in the red without the trade. Adding even more salary and the usual revenue sharing payment and you're looking at a team even more in debt. Financially, I don't think it makes sense.

RE: CHW DET - AndyP - 02-11-2012

Well, that's a fair point, should we drive an unopen team into the red....interesting.

RE: CHW DET - mattynokes - 02-11-2012

He's some research:

- Last season Detroit finished 3rd while winning 91 games.
- Their budget improved about $11.3M throughout the season.
- Toronto, who went all they way to the World Series last season only brought in around $6.5M during the playoffs.
- Over the first two months Detroit has improved their budget by less than $300K.
- Detroit paid $9.5M into revenue sharing last year.
- Overall Detroit would add about $11.78M towards their payroll with this trade, but they do get $5M cash.

Detroit has $5.5M cash. I don't see Detroit improving their budget by any large amount, maybe another $6-7M more if they continue their big winning ways. Figure maybe they improve their final budget to around $126M. Their payroll after the trade would go to around $144M. With not winning as much out of the gate, they won't have to pay as much into revenue sharing, so figure maybe $7M lost. Ok, say they get to the playoffs, we'll even say they make as much as Toronto did, so plus $6.5M.

$144M Payroll
$126M Budget
$12M Cash (Current plus Playoffs)
$7M Lost in Revenue Sharing

$126M + $12M - $144M - $7M = $-11M

Which in turn would mean Mogul won't allow you to sign Joe Arnold or any other free agency eligible players.

So...Veto
