2081-2117 GM Rankings
#1
As mentioned I was working on a rubric to analyze GM rankings since the time I joined the league (Selfishly of course).  I have compiled the data.  I am releasing the grading rubric initially.  Then I plan on doing a 10 GM release from lowest to highest rankings with scoring numbers over the next three-five days leading up to the draft.

Initially the rubric I chose is as follows:

World Series Win = 15 points
League Championship = 5 Points (You do not get points for a LC with a WS win)
Division Title = 5 Points
Wild Card Winner = 2 Points
Winning Season = 1 Point
Losing Season = -1 Point
100 Win Season = 3 Points
100 Loss Season = -3 Points

Scores will be in total points, but also points per season.

Factors which will not be taken into consideration.

1. Quality of your division.  I thought about attempting to create a value of the division, but for this exercise went against it due to difficultly of the work.

2. Where you took over a team.  There is no knock on taking over a ready-made team, versus taking over a complete garbage team.  So we'll just call it good GMing to know where to hitch your wagon :)

If anyone has opinions on tweaks to this rubric prior to releasing any data I am all ears.  First release will likely be tomorrow night.

First I'm going to start with releasing of the GMs who have been around less than 16 of the 37 seasons during the window.

Simply 3 losing seasons is what has happened so far in Arizona.  Obviously three years is not adequate to make any sort of prognostication.

Poldi built a little something before his loss to the system.  We're eagerly awaiting his return.  His post will be significantly longer than this.

Decent score based on winning a title early in his career.  Hasn't broken .500 overall on back of the 100 loss seasons, but his current trajectory is positive.

Spence came in and took over a built team.   Most importantly he didn't really screw it up.  He massaged it to two division titles, but never got over the hump.  There is a slight downward trajectory, it'll be interesting to see if Spence can overcome it.

Oakland isn't the easiest of places to play and he followed up a long missing in action GM who you'll see soon on the overall list.  Hasn't achieved much success to this point, but does have a division title to his name.

PR never really hung around long enough to see if any of his work (Tanking) paid off.  He spent the majority of his time I'm around fighting hard for the first overall pick, winning that many times.  This shows up in the losing.

GM Score: 8

Biron since joining the league has just hung around.  He's made a few moves to improve the team, but mostly just day to day goes about his business.  He's not created a disaster in Seattle, but the product has somewhat stagnated.

DLee wasn't around long but during his time in Kansas City that team flourished.  He swung wildly from two losing seasons in which he hit the 100 loss campaign both times.  Then he had 8 winning seasons with 3 of them being over 100 wins and bringing home 2 world series titles.  For a short run it was as productive as any 8 year window in the league.

Next up will start the rankings of the 32 GMs remaining on the list.

The league needs dudes who just like to play.  I am pretty sure Warpriest worries nil about opinions. There is irony here as the only division title Warpriest won during my team here, he was actually under .500.  Honestly he'd probably be in grander shape if he just never met the trade channel ever.  Warpriest has a solid eye for elite talent, he's drafted plenty of it.  Usually it then becomes stud material for someone else.  I love that he just keeps playing, and honestly think it's not a bad way to go about life.

Corey managed Toronto for a long time during my start here.  Never seemed to get them off the ground, even though he developed some elite level talent.  Never knew what really held Corey back, as his top line drafting was pretty solid.  Not sure if he lacked roster building, forced round pegs in square holes or what, but he never put it together.  I hadn't realized he never made the playoffs during my time here until I did this.

Oldwiseman always got to be a punching bag for being mzy's farm team.  He spent most of his time out west, before attempting to comeback with the Indians and then Diamondbacks. Honestly without those two attempted comebacks his overall look would be worse GM wise.  With all that stated I still miss the guy and wish he was hanging around.  Won't ever forget his porn couch during our video draft reviews.

GD rolls to GD's own drum.  With a very busy lifestyle, of which most time doesn't fit around the cycle that the rest of us play on, it is definitely harder for him to maintain balance.  With that stated, he's know for his out of nowhere top end seasons, that unfortunately never quite advance to the level one would like.  He's put a few strong teams together during his runs, which are often quite random according to most.  He knows what to draft and even when people say WTF, they usually turn out pretty well.  Unfortunately he can't make live drafts so he has to go from lists, which doesn't turn out well beyond the top end picks.

Cadmus is our leader in 100 loss seasons, however he never gets lumped into that tanker group.  Not sure if that is truly right or wrong.  Might be better to be known as a tanker.  Colorado has always been a somewhat difficult place to play, not sure how to meld offense and starting pitching into something worthwhile and Cad has shown that to be the case in mogul as well as real life.  He's developed some great players, but hasn't had the staying power of other teams.  Sometimes I wonder if you just said F the pitching and just drafted all the power hitters you could possibly get your hands on, to see how that would turn out in Colorado.

Rocky was building something in New York before taking off.  He built something in Milwaukee, but never stayed around to see the completion of anything during my time here.  He made a world series with Milwaukee, so there is definite pluses here.  He did some tanking rebuilds obviously with 3 100 loss seasons in 18 total seasons of play.  Rocky is considered one of the top notch GMs, but just didn't stay around long to prove it here.

Theo goes about his business fairly quietly, at least until he trades for Brathwayte to everyone's chagrin.  He tends to try to compete season in and season out and has hovered mostly around .500 throughout his time here.  He's pulled off three division titles in the central and has been in the playoffs 9 times total.  Never advancing to a World Serires during my time in the league.  He's a busy fellow also who when he finds time tends to swing in short bursts.

gilly has a tanker profile here, lots of 100 loss seasons, and then two real strong 100 win teams.  He won a series after a long haul and made another world series as well.  When moving out of Pittsburgh to Montreal, he got some stiffer competition from the other teams, but also got a much larger salary pool to work with.  When gilly commits he can do some good things, but he seems to spend a lot of time in the 100 loss territory.  He did some good work in Pittsburgh without ever really getting over the hump.

Wiguy came in and won a world series within his first 10 seasons.  He preceded that with a fairly extensive rebuild.  He did a shorter rebuild after that and won a lot more but never was able to return to the series.  Overall he's a very steady player and has been pretty strong ever since his entry level rebuild of the White Sox.  Wiguy has shown a propensity to be a slash and burn rebuilder, maybe not to the level of some of our biggest tankers, but he's torn it down a few times to build it back up through the draft.

Hick won a world series in San Francision and attended a second, really building up the strength of his resume.  He wasn't a big burn it to the ground guy, only losing 100 games once during his time in this window.  His winning seasons were all fairly strong, and his biggest negative is he wasn't around very long during my time in this league.

JR was a long time member whose time was dramatically reduce during his last few years in the league.  He had some wild swings, with plenty of 100 win seasons, while also having quite a few 100 loss seasons.  He never made the big dance, or won a league title, but he was competitive quite frequently.  His last few years in the league probably brought him down quite a bit, and maybe one day when more time is available he'll come back and do some good things again.

Imagine if we changed draft times for this guy.  Mike had a lot of success.  Never brought home titles during my time here, but definitely had good, strong, productive ballclubs.  A lot of his top draft picks panned out quite nicely.  Mike may be a touch full of himself, but a lot of his team production backed up a fair amount of his talk.  Not a lot of tanking done ever either.

Hokey takes a lot of talk about the tanker de jour, but only has 4 100 loss seasons to his name here.  I know he dominated this league earlier, but he's been not quite as impressive during my time here.  Maybe he's just lost some interest with age, or gotten busier, or maybe the competition has just gotten tighter.  Still is a stellar drafter of the starting pitcher and seems to hit on a lot (Let's just forget Toland).  One of my favorite GMs round these parts, and a bit of a stalker.  Good to see him snatch a title in Toronto a few years back.

I am going to give matty a bit more credit, considering he switched teams right as the Angels appeared ready to compete.  However, you get recognized for what you get recognized for.  Matty's rebuilds seem to be a slow approach but the guy wins more often than he loses.  Obviously a lot of people think a lot of his draft model.  Matty contributes immensely to the league and generally has a competitive product on the field.  Plus we are starting to enter the territory of the GMs who have been around all 37 seasons and have won more than they lost here.

Known more for his Co-GM prowess, money did spend some time running a few times on his own accord during my earlier years in FCM.  Other than the short rebuild in Kansas City, he was successful with all the other programs he was involved in building, including a world series winner in Montreal when I first arrived.  He clearly has some drafting prowess, which obviously makes him a wonderful Co-GM to which others have arrived at a similar conclusion.  Always good to have him take a team as primarily his, but the Co-GM thing seems to work well for him.

Talk about your wild swings.  Decker tends to burn his teams to the ground in between competitive runs.  He's tied with several for the fifth most 100 loss seasons in this league, oftentimes ending up with a top 5 draft pick.  However, when he puts it all together his teams usually perform to a very high level.  He's had some great teams during my time here, but has never had one put it all together and win the total prize.  His slash and burn produces some great outcomes, but he still has an overall record below .500.

Cheato has been a testament of consistency during his time here.  While he came in later to the party he has San Francisco competitive in that division every single year.  He did have a monstrous run coming right out of the rebuild he took over and his last 10 seasons haven't quite lived up to the standard cheato level, but his teams have won 2/3 of the time.  While he hasn't achieved reaching a world series yet, his consistent winning should keep his options open for getting a team hot at the right time one of these years.
