Draft Pick Trading
#1
I'd like to preface by saying I've reached the decision that no matter what I may have said in the past, I have about zero interest in being the person who is responsible for tracking future picks.

Open up draft pick (1-3) trading once we're in the off-season.

Let's face it. Many want draft pick trading to open up earlier. At the beginning on the off-season seems like a reasonable place for it to start. And let's be honest, a lot of us have talked DP trading (and probably made deals in confidence) before DP trading was officially allowed to happen. I know I have. I know Andy has and I know others have as well.

So, Andy's question that he wants answered was, "Where does it end? Where does the calling for DP trading to be opened earlier and earlier cease?"

The answer is, I can't answer that. However, I can provide some insight on the question.

1) An admin/mod has to be willing to track trades. I have already stated that I am not willing and I'm guessing most aren't willing to take on the responsibility.

2) With talking future trading in-season, sims are still happening and players can still rise and fall before the picks can actually be traded. It leaves the "what if" factor in play.

With simming until March 1 in the off-season, things are stagnate and it's easier to discuss future deals when you know the ratings won't change by the time draft pick trading is allowed. It's completely different when future sims can happen in between the present and draft pick trading is allowed.

Like, for example, when I traded for Bruce Verbos from FLA. Hokey and I agreed in principle to a 2nd and 3rd round pick for a then 88 Verbos. It was made clear that if something changed, the offer would change. Then the sim all the way to March 1 happened and he dropped to an 84. We agreed on just a 2nd rounder after that.

3) With simming until March 1 for the off-season, it allows for the maximum amount of aging/regression to happen as well as for the draft class to be known. This is all a plus so that new GMs can't be duped into trading their picks for worse value that they actually hold.

In closing, most of us already know what to expect and it would streamline the process if we could trade out of the gate. It's frustrating making a deal in principle and having to wait until right before Spring Training to make it official. It could open up a lot of things if rounds 1-3 were tradable as soon as the off-season opened.
