Barry Zito, Mike Hampton, Mark Mulder, Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano, Dontrelle Willis, Jake Peavy and on and on and on. Most of them received fair and seemingly responsible contracts and then let them down. Some due to injury some for no logical reason. For every Albert Pujols there are a 10 Wade Millers (frayed roto cuff at 29 or so) or the Dontrelle Willis'. We do remember guys like Chris Carpenter who's been playing forever but we forget he had Tommy John surgery before signing in STL and perhaps with another pitching coach he's just another flame out?
I think FCM is heavily under-appreciating just how few sustained super-star careers are had IRL and that mental, physical and health aspects are incredibly random in nature especially when you look at the big picture.
