Open DP Trading at Spring Training
#1
I know DJ was the main proprietor of holding off DP trading as long as possible but hes clearly long gone and it gets brought up in chat every once in a while but it never goes far. I figure with this post it can be the official vote to see where the league stands on opening DP trading earlier.

It's not a big issue. Hence why it probably won't change.

I'm open to the idea when someone can answer this question:

If ST is when, why not at the start of the offseason? And if that's ok, why not the prior trade deadline? And if that's ok why not allow team's to trade up to two years in advance?

I can tell you why the line is set where it is. Now you tell me why it needs to move and why the place it's moving to is the right one. Not just that you prefer it there.

current season DP's are allowed for that current season. You can't trade season 24 DPs in season 22. it's a whole extra month we get to trade the pick and it could and can help. Will it be a HUGE thing or will it just be like the extra 2 weeks the NFL has to trade players?(what you weren't aware they could do that?)

In the grand scheme it doesn't matter and probably shouldn't change, but you can't abuse it as bad as you could when we were allowed to trade future picks(if we were in fact allowed to, might have been a dif league)

I wasn't going to reply since we've talked about this time and time again. But the reason why I think it would work is:

A. Many other leagues do it and they don't seem to have a problem.
B. Trade thread titles should be noted as "Draft Pick", "DP", etc... Something that alerts Admins/Mods that trades are involved. These trades would need the appropriate approval stamps to go through, instead of our lax system that's been going on for a few seasons.
C. Most of our GMs now are veterans. They know their team and they know where they stand. It opens up more trade opportunities when potential trade partners can't find anything suitable. And we all know trading is the essence of league activity.

Additionally, I would also suggest to stop simming ahead until March 1 like we did last season. I was a big reason why we simmed to March 1 and while I still feel it benefits the league, I do not want to see draft pick trading open or encouraged the entire off-season. Even if we "wait" to trade drafts, the draft class is shown as soon as we sim to March 1 on Mogul '13.

The point of simming ahead until March is so that 1) veterans dropping over the off-season will be seen and 2) the majority of prospects aging over the off-season will be scene to more properly gauge their value. While we wouldn't see prospect's peak flucuate we can allow contracts of FAs that considerably drop over the off-season to be reduced and possibly free released - whatever the rating drop warrants.

Mike and I were talking in XAT today. With all the changes going on for the start of next year, I got one more to add to it that I would like some discussion on to see how people think:

1) We open up draft pick trading for ST. This means we will stop simming ahead to March 1st.

2) We WILL NOT....EVER....entertain moving it to the start of the offseason. I really want this understood so the conversation doesn't happen from any current GM. Moving it to ST solves some concerns people have (valid ones) but making sure we never go back further makes me feel better about my concerns for the league long-term.

I feel we can do this because we have a group that's been here a long time. They understand the value of the draft and people won't abuse this. Just make sure to note in ST deals that it is a DP trade and illustrate your reasoning clearly.

So to make that clear:

Resigning and FA update files will remain at Nov. 1

The day before ST we will do WB and sim to March 1st. At that point DP trading opens after FA has closed.

This is when we'll also probably follow an offseason schedule like this:

Thus - FA opens, Sat - first signings, Sun - update, Mon - Update, Tue - Update, Wed -WB/ST, Thurs - ST Sim, Fri - Sim 1. (or am I wrong in how we talked about that guys on XAT?)

we talked about combining the last update on tuesday with winterball then having ST on wednesday. so any injuries give a day between ST and opening day. not a big deal either way but i think it'd be better

I know most GMs would rather set their team before the season starts rather than a month into it, it works fine in 5TM so I don't know what the huge fuss is, open DP trading on march 1st so GMs can finalize their clubs before the season starts.
