Detroit Tigers @ New York Yankees (2024: 5-2 DET)
Even though the Yankees have home field advantage, the Tigers have the edge in the season series. The Tigers will be without Joaquin Murrillo for the playoffs and without Greg Quinmore for the first two games. However, the Yankees have injuries galore on the pitching staff. The matchup is probably the most even matchup the opening series has to offer. New York has better pitching (which is banged up) while Detroit has better hitting (which is missing their big bopper).

Detroit in five

Texas Rangers @ Toronto Blue Jays (2024: 7-3 TOR)
While everyone was watching the NL Wildcard and Central races unfold, lowly Texas kept finding itself within striking distance of the A's. Oakland kept messing around and let the Rangers stay in the race. And finally the Mogul scheduling gods got it right. The season ended with a four game set pairing the two teams in a dual that came down to the final game.

All that is great for Texas and the season is an amazing accomplishment already for them...and it's where it ends. Toronto is just too good. They've got Bosworth. They've got Vickers. If Texas can manage to squeak out a win, it'd be good for them and all of the second home game revenue. But the Jays are the favorites and they should win easily.

Toronto in four

Colorado Rockies @ Florida Marlins (2024: 3-3 TIE)
This may be the most exciting matchup of the playoffs. It's Pace, Clapsaddle, Cote, and Thorne versus Brand, Gamora, Paine, and Rabena. Pitching vs Hitting! What will give first? The Marlins are known for having great regular seasons and then struggling to win come crunch time. The last time the Rockies were in the playoffs it was against these same Marlins and they took it the distance in a very close series.

Florida in five

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Arizona Diamondbacks (2024: 5-3 PIT)
I always think having to play an extra game to get into the playoffs is a huge disadvantage. However, Arizona has been struggling as of late with a 14-17 record to close out the season. Pittsburgh is without Dom Fulgham and Alfonso Predrasa would only be available if the series goes the full five games. A full strength Pirates team wins this series. But with health and depth being on Arizona's side...

Arizona in four

That puts...

Detroit Tigers @ Toronto Blue Jays (2024: 5-3 DET)
If anyone can take down the Jays, the Tigers can do it.

Detroit in seven

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Florida Marlins (2024: 3-3 TIE)
C'mon, it's Hokey...

Arizona in six

And then (yep it's purple!)...

Arizona Diamondbacks vs Detroit Tigers (2024: N/A)
So now that both of the #1 teams are out...

Detroit in six
