Lower Release Payouts - No 100%
#11
I used to be a big time supporter of the 100% buyout, but the reason I've lessen my stance is because of the random veteran drops. A player randomly dropping off clearly isn't realistic and there's no way to predict who and when it will happen. These random drops can make what was once a smart, logical, and fair contract now look like an irresponsible, dead weight contract.

This happens in real life as well. Alfonso Soriano anyone? These things are a real life deterrant in some ways and are effective here as well.

But beyond that, when the 100% was put in, there were three conditions attached to it as well that you could appeal to an admin about to lessen the buyout/ntc.
Also, if the issue is hurting rebuilds or other franchises based on past GM mistakes or whatever - I don't think anything should be beyond the admins to change. If it's for the good of the league I think most of us will agree to anything, even if it isn't exactly fair.

What about Soriano? The dude is 35. I'm sure you're referring to his 2010 season. He was 34 then and what I'm talking about is the 29-31 age guys who suddenly fall off the table. And if it was a small amount, then no big deal because it happens. But I've had about all my guys in the 29-31 range drop at least once since I've been here. It's not realistic to have THAT many drop in that short of a period.

I'd still stand by my suggestion. With using a $5M salary as an example at the least on one year remaining the team would still have to pay $3.75M and if it was four or more years they'd still have to pay $18M of the total $20M. I don't see many releases happening until one or two years left and that's pretty much the point.

And for DJ, I don't think me saying that production should come with the contract is what you think. It's not a you paid them, now sit back and watch them rake. It's the fact that if they aren't terribly old and they have a history of success -- thus making sense to re-sign them, then you shouldn't be fearing that they'll randomly drop tomorrow.

It's just the reality of Mogul 2011 that players take randomn drops - especially position players. I've taken issue with it too, but there's nothing we can do to stop it.

Be more careful about who you sign and for how long you sign them - contracts have risk in real life too. I'd much rather try to control people handing out bad deals by enforcing the 100% rule and then let DJ make judgement calls about deals that deserve breaks in the best interest of the league.

Barry Zito, Mike Hampton, Mark Mulder, Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano, Dontrelle Willis, Jake Peavy and on and on and on. Most of them received fair and seemingly responsible contracts and then let them down. Some due to injury some for no logical reason. For every Albert Pujols there are a 10 Wade Millers (frayed roto cuff at 29 or so) or the Dontrelle Willis'. We do remember guys like Chris Carpenter who's been playing forever but we forget he had Tommy John surgery before signing in STL and perhaps with another pitching coach he's just another flame out?

I think FCM is heavily under-appreciating just how few sustained super-star careers are had IRL and that mental, physical and health aspects are incredibly random in nature especially when you look at the big picture.
