All the kids seem to be doing mock drafts of one thing or another nowadays, so this is mine for the 2043 First Class Mogul draft.
1. Florida Marlins
Needs: SS, 2B, RP, 3B
The Florida Marlins have the honor of drafting first in the 2043 FCM Draft (sounds familiar?). The age old question of the first pick is if to take the best player or best player of need. It seems in this instance it can be summed up with the same player. Current 3B prospect Sebastian Musgrove can also play 2B which helps too. Barring a trade out Florida should select:
3B Damian Blackburn
2. Los Angeles Dodgers
Needs: EVERYTHING
The Los Angeles Dodgers could not go wrong with anything they pick mostly because its probably better than what is already on the team, aside from 1B of course. Trading back and picking up some better players is a good idea. Otherwise a pitcher is probably in order here. Its a coin flip but the Dodgers should pick:
SP Carlos Cadavieco
3. Oakland Athletics
Needs: MI, P
Oakland gets the third pick and they have some obvious middle infield holes but at 3 it might be a little to early to reach for some help here since you have the ability to close up a few other holes with players available. Unless they can trade back another pitchers is in order here. Cadavieco would have been great here but if/since hes already gone Oakland should select:
SP Jon MacLewis
4. Chicago Cubs
Needs: almost everything
The Cubs have the fourth pick and much like the Dodgers can really do no wrong here. As with most of these bottom teams if they could get out of this pick and pick up some more they would be better off. Outside of that hope the Chicago Cubs should select:
CF Dave Tomkinson
5. Cleveland Indians
Needs: CF, RP
The Cleveland Indians are the first team that may be better served in trading up in this draft. Dave Tompkinson seems to me to be the best in the draft and if one other card falls wrong Cleveland could get left out of an attractive CF altogether. Based on what we have already selected Cleveland should pick:
CF Bryan Tullis
6. New York Yankees
Needs: RP SS 1B
The New York Yankees have a lot of nice young pieces on the farm. They could go the easy route and take the best pitcher available. Or they could live dangerously and invest in a player that could grow into something special or implode into a pile of Kevin Maas'. The New York Yankees select:
1B John Golia
7. Los Angeles Angels
Needs: MI, RP
At this point the Angels have a few fun draft options. They could get the best available pitcher. They could go after a middle infielder. Or of course they could go after one of the outfielders available. Best case situation will have the Angels drafting:
2B Brent Flori
8. Seattle Mariners
Needs: 0
Most complete team so far the Seattle Mariners would do well to trade up and get the best positional talent available. Other than doing that the most obvious pick for Seattle would be:
SP Jim McPheidrian
9. Tampa Bay Rays
Needs: C
At first glance the only weakness on the farm seems to be in the way of catching. At this spot it may be too much of a reach to go after the best catcher. Hopefully a trade back can make this match a reality. Tampa Bay should select:
C Kirk Wareing
10. Milwaukee Brewers
Needs: OF, P, 1B
The team is just good enough to be bad and just bad enough to be good. At this slot they should miss out on at least two of the best outfielders and the top 1B. Rough call here. Without a trade the Milwaukee Brewers should select:
SP Tom Sutherland
11. San Francisco Giants
Needs: C, SS, RP, CF
This team is about deep with SP as any team in the league which makes it tough in this incredible pitching heavy draft. Based on who else is picked some possibilites may include C Kirk Wareing and CF Bryan Tullis. In this draft those are taken so the Giants should pick:
CF Manny Triana
12. San Diego Padres
Needs: 1B, 3B, OF
This team has some good major league talent but doesn't have much in the farm on the positional side. I could see most any position player listed so far fitting in here if they slip especially 1B Golia or CF Tullis. Since they haven't here the Padres should draft:
1B Ron Olson
13. Chicago White Sox
Needs: MI, SP, OF
White Sox has done a good job of letting its prospects fully develop before bringing them to the big club as only one unpeaked player is on the major league roster. I think the first round pick of the White Sox comes down to the best available which at this point is going to be a pretty good pitcher. The White Sox should select:
SP Eric Friedlander
14. Detroit Tigers
Needs: OF, SP
Detroit has a lot of major league talent but have a few OF spots open for potential draftees. As always a good SP never hurt anyone but it seems that in this situation the Detroit Tigers will select:
LF Raphael Fusano
15. Minnesota Twins
Needs: EVERYTHING
First of three 1st round picks and each one of them will be needed to build up this farm system. Time to throw a dart and hope it sticks. The Twins should draft:
SP Paul Reinhold
16. St Louis Cardinals
Needs: SP, C
The St. Louis Cardinals have an interesting mix of farm talent with a few exceptions at C and SP. Since the only Catcher worthy of being drafted in the first 3 rounds is off the board pitching it shall be. The Cardinals should select:
SP Hirohito Hayashi
17. Seattle Mariners
The good teams just keep getting gooder. Seattle takes:
1B James Connolly
18. Washington Nationals
Needs: Thin out the herd
The Nationals have a stockpile of prospects. So many its hard to really see anything that gets drafted here really developing. Luckily we have just the draft pick for this instance. The Nationals should draft:
SP George Marks
19. Arizona Diamondbacks
Needs: P, MI, OF
Arizona has a few good prospects and some young talent at the major league level but could use a restock of prospects in the middle infield and outfield and even on the pitching side. Since infield is a bit of a stretch at this pick the Diamondbacks should select:
LF Weldon Laidler
20. Kansas City Royals
Needs: RP, OF
Most of Kansas Citys talent is in the majors but the most pressing position of need seems to be in the outfield, which is good because this is the part of the draft that has them. The Kansas City Royals should select:
LF Dan Berry
21. Colorado Rockies
Needs: SP, IF, OF
Colorado has a plethora of prosepctial needs so anything chosen here is sure to be a fit unless of course they bust out. Colorado Rockies best selection here:
SP Chris Johns
22. Minnesota Twins
Back to the drawing board. If they really did go pitching on pick one position player should be here. The Twins should select:
CF Howard Bates
23. Atlanta Braves
Needs: SP, 3B, CF
Atlanta is a youthful stacked team and anything here would merely be for reloading for the future. There are still a few highly rated pitchers and even a CF here but it seems like there is only one way to go. Atlanta should select:
3B Angel Baca
24. New York Mets
Needs: SP
Mets have done well in picking up young highly rated talent. Most obvious direction is starting pitching and the starting pitcher the Mets should select:
SP Enrique Jauguigi
25. Florida Marlins
Second pick for the Marlins in the first round should yield a useful if not top notch pitcher. The Marlins should select:
SP Andy Smith
26. Minnesota Twins
Again? Well make the best out of this pick just like any of the others. Twins should pick:
CF Mario Rios
27. Cincinnati Reds
Needs: could use a little bit of everything
Another perrenial contender that keeps his farm thin. Most likely a best player available pick in order to leverage a major league piece later one. The Reds should pick:
SP Brian Tikaran
28. Baltimore Orioles
Needs: to trim the hedges
Another guy that loves to love talent on the farm. With the talent on his major league roster its really hard for any of these guys to break through, which is why Baltimore will take the best talent available:
SP Victor Deazo
29. St. Louis
If I am anything close to right the Cardinals did not draft a catcher with their first pick. Not going to get one here either so might as well stock up on the best player avaialable:
SP James Allen
30. Texas Rangers
Needs: SP, OF
Finally to the world champions of the world. Any preceived lack of depth in this farm system is due to a committment to win. Back to back. With what we have left in this mock Texas should draft:
CF Jonathan Gallery
Feel free to complain about every pick made in the comments below.
