No Longer Allow Natural Position Changes
#11
Not that I'm doing any, but I should add as a grace who may already be in year 1 of a position change process, would prolly be fair to have this rule come into effect starting the season after this one.

Unless I hear a good reason otherwise, this should be illegal under the "Don't be an Ass" rule.

Because there is no rational position to play the speedy 2B/SS otherwise. Even with defensive edits, they don't always get other positions added. Even if they do, they don't fit the 1B or DH profile. Because of this, they're just stuck in purgatory.

It's preposterous that Mogul would even create players as poorly as it does at 2B/SS when the quality needed to even tread water in the league is so high. That's why giving them a position to be useful makes sense.

Why wouldn't we use that logic for any player? "This guy has playable vitals for power and eye but his contact is so low we just buy a WB slot to fix his contact"

We're not in the business of artificially fixing the warts of mogul player development. Last I checked, in real life there are plenty of guys who face this exact issue. And most of them just simply end up not playable because of it.

That's trying to make what I'm suggesting into something totally different. It's a suggestion to take a player that Mogul suggests (from Speed) is athletically gifted, yet their defense (namely Range) suggests that are not.

There certainly are players who are not playable due to poor defense. Those generally come in the form of a corner outfielder who can't field or a first baseman who can't even handle that position. Speedy players (like Billy Hamilton and BJ Upton) are moved to the outfield when they're deemed unplayable in the infield.

The defensive edits take care of:
C to 1B
3B to 1B
RF to LF
CF to LF or RF

But Middle Infield, which generally needs to have 90+ range, doesn't have a suitable defensive edit if they only have (for example) 80 range.

Your examples are not of players that fit that.    I can think of a few speedy players in the big leagues that are not particularly rangy either. Jean Segura.  Jose Peraza.  Whit Merrifield.  Simply having speed doesn't mean one has good range.

The few players this applies to doesn't seem to warrant this kind of response.  You know the player's weaknesses when you draft them.  Taking advantage of a glitch isn't acceptable.

I guess I'm lost on how they are not good examples. Both Hamilton and Upton started out as middle infielders and were moved to the outfield. Something Mogul doesn't allow.

Merrifield rates as a positive range defender at 2B. Peraza as league average range at SS. Segura is below average, but barely. In FCM terms, Segura would have 90 range when the league average is around 91-92. That's still highly playable at those positions with speed, where as 80 range in FCM is horrible at SS and would rate far in the negative.

There are a lot of data points on all three of those players that make them subpar range defenders or subpar defenders in general.

I don't like creating more things to fix minor issues. How many players a year does this impact?
