Fixing the File Switch - AndyP - 11-23-2012

We've already been creating conversation on the sports mogul site trying to get a fix on the arm issues. We've done all we can there.

I would like to submit that a number of rebuilding teams have been badly hurt by the file's strange switch with handling that we allow teams to submit catching names that have been adversely affected. Here's the criteria I would suggest:

If your catcher has had a drop of 10 or more in handling from the switch that you are allowed to submit the name for review and if it's decided tht the player's handling/range was unfairly dropped we should edit the catcher back to his original state.

Names I immediately think of: Dusty Alderson was a 93 handling, now 50 something. Haider from 78 to 50.

Thoughts? It's not fair to let this just be an "oh well" move - players were edited unfairly by the file, we're just setting things right.

Obviously I am biased in this case, considering I inherited Alderson, but I am 100% in favor of adjusting handling ratings. Even if the handling ratings aren't bumped all the way to their original states, any sort of adjustment is better than none after a totally unnecessary, unforeseen drop. Even if I try to put myself in the shoes of an owner who was not affected by this, I really can't find a plausible argument against a review process at the very least.

I can't say I know enough about the Mogul simulator to understand how much handling ratings really affect pitcher performance, but my pitchers have been absolutely dreadful this season. Sure, I don't have the best bullpen in the world, and I'm not saying that I should even be league average in terms of runs allowed. But I have some pretty quality arms in my rotation, and not one of them is within an ERA point of where they probably should be based on their talent. Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe it's not, but it seems rather unlikely to me.

Ill just say it makes no sense to apply this to anyone that was acquired after the bm13 switch

RE: Fixing the File Switch - AndyP - 11-23-2012

This would only apply to players that were effected based on the final sim of the Mogul '11 (2031 Playoff file) and their current status. So any player that exists after that point will not be adjusted.

Players traded or traded for cna be nominated, but they may not be switched.

RE: Fixing the File Switch - JRWorcester - 11-24-2012

Denis Gutierrez 87 handling to 44 handling
Andy Spain 78 handling to 56 handling
Marty Maclamond 43 handling Just wondering if the first draft was affected too as it says he has an 80 in fielding but his 43 in handling makes him useless in the field unless he maybe can play first which is a long shot.

RE: Fixing the File Switch - Cdawg - 11-25-2012

Ken Whitten fell from 96 to a 52

I don't think it should just be limited to the rebuilding, like you said it should be taken on a case by case. 44 is a huge drop. He had one of the highest handling's in the game and I never signed him based off his arm or glove. It was his handling and power.

I've compared some of the suggested players from '11 to '13 and what I find is the predicteds are the same. Pre-2013 I've felt Handling was simply Range with a shiny new name and that it meant very little for catchers. I don't think you can compare 2011 Handling to 2013 Handling since they aren't calculated the same.

2013's defensive formula seems to have changed greatly. I see other positions where players greatly lost their defensive vitals. It's simply how Mogul figures the ratings on 2013, it's completely different. We've historically had weak defensive catchers. "Fixing" Handling will only artificially inflate other ratings.

RE: Fixing the File Switch - mike - 11-26-2012

I'd have to agree with Matty on this one. But if you indeed went ahead and tweaked things anyway, I feel that all positions should be fixed not just catchers

RE: Fixing the File Switch - AndyP - 11-27-2012

Again, handling does matter, plenty of people have found that in mogul. Either way, players having a 90 "range" in '11 suddenly having 50 range and 40 handling in '13 isn't a problem of recalculation. Especially since some players magically stayed up. If you can find what the actual reason for these bizarre drops for some and not for others I'm all ears.

Arm strength and handling were the only things altered from what I saw. Either way, it's not fair to throw up our hands and say "oh well....sorry you got fucked". If you draft bad handling from here on - that's on you. But no reason to punish teams for something beyond their control. We've already adjusted for arm strengths, we should do it for this as well.

RE: Fixing the File Switch - GoIrish - 11-28-2012

Here is what I propose. Everyone go off your own roster and any player that is effected by the change, include in this post and what the ratings should be changed to. This saturday, I will have free time (no ND football). I will go into the file and correct all the individual players effected on Saturday but to do this, I would need everyone to post so I can go straight down the list for each team. I would prefer if you did it alphabetically So I can go down the line in sortable stats and just plug away.
