Compensation Idea - mike - 12-29-2011 This idea would eliminate the need to have sandwhich rounds or any pen and paper type stuff. I stole this from another leaue I'm in and made a minor tweak here and there but by all means I'm not the inventer of this idea. A system is in the works to come close to replicating that which is used by MLB in real life. In order to receive compensation, the team losing the free agent must offer arbitration to the player that if he were to accept would receive a 1-year deal worth 1.1 X his last per year salary. (easier math than having to calculate the average of however many players at their position. Although I'd be fine with either way). Type A compensation will net the team losing the free agent an extra first round draft pick and an extra 2nd round draft pick. Type B compensation will net the team losing the free agent an extra second round draft pick. The first round picks will be created by duplicating any player chosen after the 10th overall pick. The second round picks will be created by duplicating any player chosen after the first round. GMs will be allowed to change all the personal information of the players created (Name, college, nation, nickname, etc.) Teams signing compensation eligible free agents WILL NOT lose a draft pick. RE: Compensation Idea - mattynokes - 12-29-2011 I'm not really a fan of duplicating players, especially since with that way a compensation pick could net a better player than late first rounders (i.e. someone could choose to duplicate the #11 pick which should be better than the #30 pick). And the problem I have with a 1.1 X salary arbitration figure is that if a player is having a monster year, the arbitration figure likely wouldn't be right. Here's something I brought up to DJ: - Type A compensation will happen between rounds 1 and 2. Type B compensation will happen between rounds 2 and 3 - Teams signing compensation players will lose their 5th round (Type A) or 6th round (Type B) picks - Teams can sign a maximum of three compensated players per off-season - Teams would also surrender their 4th round pick if three compensated players are signed - Compensation selections will be done via pen and paper style and then entered in-game when the corresponding selections come up in the 5th and 6th rounds - An archive (thread) will be posted in the draft forum to track the compensation selections So, for example, Houston signs a Type A player from Colorado. Colorado gets a compensation pick after the first round. When we get to that point in the draft Colorado makes their selection and it is noted by the draft coordinator. It is also updated in the archive thread so other GMs know the player has been taken. Then when we get to Houston's pick in the 5th round, the compensation selection made by Colorado is entered in-game. ---------- A problem we've seen is people don't want to give up their earlier draft picks for free agents unless they're absolute studs. Quite frankly, realistically any GM would give up a pick for known commodity that can help their team since the pick is likely to take 3-5 years to become MLB material. With this we're not having to move picks around or have some complicated scheme. And if someone wouldn't give up a 5th round pick (that'll amount to a 70s peak) for a quality player, then they're looking at compensation all wrong. RE: Compensation Idea - AndyP - 12-29-2011 I kind of like Matty's idea. This way teams signing Type A's would only be giving a second rounder while those getting the pick still get a first rounder. Win-win....is this something we're considering? RE: Compensation Idea - mattynokes - 12-29-2011 (12-29-2011, 08:05 PM)AndyP Wrote: I kind of like Matty's idea. This should definitely improve bidding on players, even guys with injury problems. I definitely would've been bidding on Steve Eickholt if I were only losing one of my last two picks. RE: Compensation Idea - AndyP - 12-29-2011 I think we'd improve it even if we switched it to a 2 and 3. Mogul's first round is a lot to give up. But once you dive down even to the 2nd it's easier to justify FA gambles. RE: Compensation Idea - mike - 12-30-2011 Even a second round pick is a lot in mogul. I sort of like matty's idea but I hate that we'd have to jot down whos been taken with the comp picks. Not because I would forget but I could see a lot of other people forgetting. The duplicating players idea is so we would avoid any pen and paper type things. You could say that instead of after the first 10 picks its the first 20 or whatever. 10 was just the suggestion. RE: Compensation Idea - mattynokes - 12-30-2011 For Mike's idea no matter where we'd start the duplicating, there's still going to be compensation picks that are better than picks that come before it. With my idea, it definitely would improve bidding just to go to 2nd and 3rd rounders, but going to 5th and 6th rounders would probably remove all doubts of people bidding. I don't think the pen and paper rounds would be that tough. Instead of having someone track the who's available list (which hardly anyone uses), we could have someone track who's been taken in the compensation rounds. It's pretty easy to click on a link and read a short list. |
