BAL/TBR

:BAL:
Receives:
SS Adam Mertens (77/93) - 20 years old
RP Dan Ruhl (48/85) - 16 years old
SP Chiris Blazek (78/78) - 28 years old, makes $3.1 mil through 2013

:TBR:
Receives:
C Austin Romine (79/91) - 23 years old
6 Million in cash

Romine is a good player, but at 23, we are worried he may not develop much more. Mertens looks to have one hell of a bat for a middle infielder and Ruhl could end up being a special player down the road.

I agree. Wanted to make the move for a Catcher and I did that. As well as I dropped some salary on the way. All and all. good deal for me.

I'm going to hold off on this and get some other opinions - why is Baltimore paying nearly 9M in contracts and cash for Ruhl and the swap of Mertens and Romine? My personal feeling is that Mertens isn't nearly the player Romine is, but even if it could be argued differently, the amount of money here doesn't make much sense to me.

I'd like to hear from some others, for now I'm undecided.

What you dont see is Romine is 23, Mertens is 20. For all I know Romine can peak by seasons end. Metens is less likley to not.

well actually seeing that Romine is 12pts away from his peak and still in the 70s, I wouldn't expect him to hit his peak next season

It could happen Jordan...but even if it does. 9M? Why is 9M being exchanged?

Yea, baltimore should have wrote what the reason was behind acquiring him.

Alright -

Blazek is indeed partially a salary dump, but we think he can be a decent arm in the rotation for us (we also need someone to take Matsuz's spot, if indeed that deal goes through).

The money/Blazek reflects the difference in likelihood of Mertens hitting his peak versus Romine, as well as the potential for the 16 year old Ruhl to become a solid arm in a number of years.

I had McCromick last year at a 79/94. And he hit peak. And nows a 78. So anything can happen I believe.

It's an odd deal but it's fine. Approve. Can't figure out the money entirely, but it's going from a team w/ plenty for a very good arm (I think Ruhl is better than 85) to a well-built team w/ a lower budget trying to sustain success so I don't think it's the end of the world.

In other words, the GMs heads are in the right places.
