I was actually thinking of suggesting one of these a few days ago, but never got to it and now it's already been brought up. But I'll make it an official suggestion.
100% Buyouts
Base and Player Option salaries should be 100% buyouts. It makes it more realistic by helping fight against people taking advantage of signing bench type guys for 4-5 years as well as the obvious way MLB does their contracts.
Team options would still be free to drop as they don't add any value and they are, well, the team's option to pick up or not.
In-Season FA Limited To 1 Year Deals
I think this would also add a lot of realism. No matter how much the salary, I think in-season FA should be limited to a 1 year deal. Players under should still get arbitration style contracts which give more years under team control, but it's just not realistic for a guy to sign a longer term day in, say, June after not playing since last year.
Contract Payments
Many times GMs will add in cash to help out with a higher salary. It'd be neat if a guy making $15M for 2 more years and then $5M was added to a trade for his new salary to be $12.5M for the remaining 2 years. One of the benefits is that if done, someone couldn't ask for money they don't really need to flip it into something else.
