We have a glut of pitching and we think we're better off with Madellan for the next few years than Sather. We're not sure if we will be working with McInnis or Boras to resign him, but with 20+ million coming off our books we can afford to take him.
Ballon was an auto-pick for us and we'd rather have Caustan who is a player we see as being a perfect fit with the young wave of players in our farm.

I would have had to negotiated with Boras, and with current resignings of Manny and Manuel Varqas this offseason I don't think I could afford all three. I needed to upgrade my pitching, although Sather and his lack of Fastball, quality pitches and OBA is a big drawback I think he still have some room for improvement and could become a quality number 2 pitcher.
Ballon will be my future 2B allowing me to move Hardigg to SS in a couple of years and the RP was a much needed necessity for my depleted pitching farm.
