New Stadium Effects, Guidelines - mattynokes - 08-07-2012

I have used FanGraphs' park factors for our stadium effects. I did use them for a specific year (or even range of years) or use them exactly. Instances where I felt a season was misleading I may have used a different year or wider range. Since theirs are already halved for use on full season stats, I have generally doubled them. To figure out the batting average factor, I used a weighted formula based on the average hits that are singles, doubles, triples, and home runs.

Before we get into see how they look I am recommending all outfield dimensions to be returned to their original status. Playing Field items will be altered to reflect the new Effects (i.e. if you have 96 K factor, your visibility will be set at Excellent).

If you have made changes you may be reimbursed for the costs, but it is not a guarantee (like if it's determined you already got a good deal of value out of it). Or you may be able to revert make to your changed dimensions and I will alter your stadium according to the new guidelines.

New Stadium Guidelines

Changes are listed as increases, you can opt to decrease areas. They will have the corresponding opposite value.

Infield Quality: Cannot be changed (Everyone is set at Average)
Infield Grass: Everyone defaults at Average...Improving a level gives you a +1 in BA...Cost is $2.5M
Visbility: Improving a level gives you -2 in K and +1 in BA...Cost is $5M
Foul Ground: Improving a level gives you -1 in BA...Cost is $2.5M

Install Turf: Gives you +1 BA, +2 2B...Cost is $10M
Install Grass: Gives you -1 BA, -2 2B...Cost is $10M

Adjusting Dimensions:
Moving the corner walls in 10 feet gets you +2 HR, 0 BA, -2 2B, -1 3B
Moving the alley walls in 10 feet gets you +4 HR, +1 BA -3 2B, and -5 3B
Moving the CF wall in 10 feet gets you +3 HR, +1 BA -3 2B, -4 3B

Estimate that moving your outfield walls 20-30 feet would cost between $12-18M

Dimension cost and effect change will be a case by case scenario. If you wish to make a change please suggest your cost and park effects based off of the guidelines. For example, moving the alleys will have a large effect than moving the corners.

Upgrade Convenience/Comfort/Sight Lines: Cost is $20M

Seating Expansion: Cost is $1M per 100 Seats

RE: New Stadium Effects, Guidelines - 'PR' - 08-07-2012

Am I being reimbursed for the dimension changes I made?
Am I being reimbursed for the Playing field changes I made?

If I can still make dimension changes, I will post them later today.

Yes, you will be reimbursed, but if you make changes you will be charged.

Stadium Reimbursements
Atlanta: $10M
Minnesota: $40M

Reimbursement Considerations

RE: New Stadium Effects, Guidelines - sxr007 - 08-08-2012

I agree with all of the numbers except:

San Diego is a 6 point diffenence with the next team in the batting average category. I believe it should be more like a 4 point difference in batting average. 5 point difference is the worse difference I could see. Your formula must be leaning more towards powere numbers then the very common single.

Other then the batting average number slight diiffence I see, good job Matty.

I took averages of hits over the past few seasons, which came out as:

67% 1B
20% 2B
02% 3B
11% HR

Then calculating the factor for each individual hit gives you the BA factor. I believe a lot of the reason for the very low BA factor is home runs at other parks become routine flyouts in Petco because of the deep alleys.

Though this has opened up a slight tweak. Mogul doesn't think moving the walls has any effect on BA, but I think realistically it actually does. So in that respect moving the walls will have a slight effect in the park's BA factor.

Now that I have the numbers for the weighted average, Fair enough.

Thanks for the work, Matty
